Well Path Proximity Analysis

From DGInsider Q1 2000/Q4 1999

In a mature field with many existing boreholes, it is often necessary to perform an “interference check,” or “collision avoidance” calculation after positioning a new borehole. An evmacro named “wellprox” is available that uses the EarthVision Formula Processor and some UNIX commands to calculate the minimum distance between a proposed well path and a file of existing well paths.

The underlying script takes a planned well path and compares it to a set of existing well paths, calculating the distance between the planned path and every other existing well path. If the distance between the well paths is less than the minimum set by the user, the well path color is set to red and the radius of the well path is set to the distance. This file can then be displayed in the EarthVision 3D Viewer (evview).

The “wellprox” scripts are available from ftp.dgi.com/pub/wellprox. Please give us a call if you have any questions about how to use this evmacro.
